Mohammed Zaytoun

In the Galilean village of Nahaf, artisan Mohammed Zaytoun has made it his life’s mission to keep one of Palestine’s rarest crafts alive: weaving with wheat straw. At a time when technology shapes nearly everything around us, Mohammed chose to return to the roots—to the fields, to the stories, and to the traditions that shaped generations before him.

What makes his work so special is that he does everything from the very beginning. He plants the wheat, harvests it by hand, and carefully selects the stalks best suited for weaving. Some straw he leaves in its natural golden color, while others he dyes the traditional way—using pigments made from flowers, herbs, stones and spices.

His designs are not only rooted in Palestine but also echo the wider cultural exchange of our neighbors. Many of his pieces blend Palestinian and Syrian or Lebanese influences, reflecting centuries of trade and shared heritage across the region. This spirit of connection is what makes Mohammed’s work resonate so strongly with our vision at Mosaic of Cultures.

Like us, Mohammed believes that tradition is not just something of the past, it is something to be lived, shared, and carried forward. His art tells the stories of resilience, memory, and unity, reminding us that even in a world of change, culture is what ties us together.
