The Land and I: Nabil Anani

The Land and I presents a selection of more than 183 artworks by renowned Palestinian artist Nabil Anani, tracing his exploration of Palestine's natural landscape from the early 1970s to the present.

Spanning more than five decades of artistic practice, the book becomes a visual and chromatic record of the Palestinian landscape—its colours, textures, forms, and transformations—and of the land as a central source of inspiration throughout Anani's career.

Through his paintings and experiments with materials and techniques, Anani documents a landscape that has undergone profound changes amid ongoing attempts to alter and reshape the Palestinian land and its topography. His work therefore functions not only as art, but also as a form of visual documentation and cultural memory, preserving the experience of Palestine's natural environment across generations.

The book is introduced by Abdul-Rahim al-Shaikh, renowned Palestinian poet and professor of philosophy and cultural studies at Birzeit University. His essay, “He Sees What He Wants,” examines Anani's artistic journey through intellectual, poetic, theoretical, political, social, cultural, and artistic perspectives. Reflecting on the relationship between land, body, identity, and art, Al-Shaikh describes the book as an exercise in looking at “the Palestinian body that became a landscape, and the landscape that became a body.”

The artworks were selected by curator and researcher Rana Anani, revealing the evolving stages of Nabil Anani's creative journey. The selection highlights his development as a master of colour and form, as well as his experimentation with texture, composition, repetition, and organic materials drawn from the land.

Anani's innovative practice has incorporated local materials including leather, henna, natural dyes, papier-mâché, wood, beads, and copper, reflecting a deep connection between artistic expression, Palestinian materials, and cultural heritage.

About Nabil Anani

Nabil Anani, born in Latrun, Palestine, in 1943, is a key founder of the contemporary Palestinian art movement. He graduated in Fine Art from Alexandria University, Egypt, in 1969 and returned to Palestine, where he began working as an artist and teacher-trainer at the UN College in Ramallah.

He held his first exhibition in Jerusalem in 1972 and has since exhibited extensively in Palestine and internationally, including exhibitions in Europe, North America, the Middle East, North Africa, and Japan.

A multidisciplinary artist, Anani works across painting, ceramics, and sculpture. He pioneered the use of locally sourced materials such as leather, henna, natural dyes, papier-mâché, wood, beads, and copper, creating a distinctive artistic language rooted in Palestinian land and heritage.

His works are held in museums and private collections, including the Aga Khan Museum in Canada and the Jordanian National Museum. In 1997, he received the first Palestinian National Prize for Visual Art. He later became head of the League of Palestinian Artists and played an important role in establishing the first International Academy of Fine Art in Palestine. In 2006, he received the King Abdullah II Arab World Prize for Fine Art.

Anani lives in Ramallah, Palestine.

Abdul-Rahim al-Shaikh is a Palestinian poet and professor of philosophy and cultural studies at Birzeit University, as well as a senior fellow at the Institute for Palestine Studies. His work focuses on poetics, theory, translation, and representations of Palestinian identity.

Rana Anani is a Palestinian curator, writer, and researcher specializing in visual arts and culture. She has worked with major Palestinian and regional cultural institutions and has served as Head of Communication at the Palestinian Museum, Project Manager of Qalandiya International 2018, and Associate Curator of a Sharjah Biennale 13 off-site project in Ramallah.
